J.C. Newman Cigar Company is the family business behind Cuesta-Rey, Angel Cuesta and revived historic brands such as Sarzedas, founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1895. We stock four of its lines, from the Nicaraguan-made Sarzedas Robusto to cigars rolled by hand at the company’s El Reloj factory, such as the Angel Cuesta Toro.
By the company’s account, Julius Caesar “J.C.” Newman began making cigars in a barn on the family property in Cleveland in 1895, and the business relocated to Tampa in 1954. His son Stanford Newman bought the Cuesta-Rey brand from Karl and Anch Cuesta in 1958, and the Newmans restored their Ybor City factory, El Reloj, in 2002.
Eric and Bobby Newman lead the company today. Of the roughly 40,000 licensed U.S. cigar manufacturers operating in 1895, J.C. Newman says it is the only one still run by its founding family.
Where are J.C. Newman cigars made? Angel Cuesta and the LeRoy Neiman Collector’s Edition come from El Reloj in Florida, Sarzedas from PENSA in Estelí, and Cuesta-Rey from Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic.
Does the LeRoy Neiman cigar support a cause? Yes. Cigar Aficionado reported on October 28, 2025 that J.C. Newman and the LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation will donate all of the cigar’s profits to fund arts programs for Tampa public schools.
