If you’ve heard cigar people talk about Opus X in reverent tones, this is the cigar that started it all — and honestly, it still holds up.

Back in the early ’90s, Carlos “Carlito” Fuente Jr. set out to do something nobody thought was possible: build a truly world-class cigar using nothing but Dominican tobacco, wrapper included. At the time, everyone assumed premium wrapper leaf just couldn’t be grown there. Carlito and his father proved them wrong, planting Cuban-seed tobacco on 37 acres at their family farm, Chateau de la Fuente. When Opus X launched in 1995, it became the first true Dominican puro, and it completely changed how the industry thought about what Dominican tobacco could do.

The Double Robusto measures 5¾” x 52 — a bit bigger than the standard Robusto, giving the blend a little more room to breathe. Every part of it, wrapper, binder, and filler, comes from Chateau de la Fuente, finished in that signature reddish-hued Rosado wrapper the whole Opus X line is known for. It’s rolled by hand at Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia in the Dominican Republic.

As for the smoke itself: expect a solid hit of black pepper and spice right out of the gate, easing into leather and earth as it settles in. By the midpoint, rich cocoa and dark chocolate start to take over, often with a little cedar or toasted nut in the background. It finishes smooth but still powerful, usually with a touch of sweetness lingering — honey, vanilla, sometimes even a hint of dried cherry, depending on the box.

Opus X has never been easy to find, and that’s very much by design. Production stays limited on purpose, which is part of why it’s held onto its reputation as one of the most sought-after cigars in the world for three decades running. If you’ve never had one, the Double Robusto is a genuinely good place to start.
