Description

The Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share Robusto is a 5 1/4 x 50 Dominican puro whose wrapper comes from the plant’s middle leaves, not the upper ones standard OpusX uses. halfwheel lists it as sun-grown Chateau de la Fuente leaf over Dominican binder and filler.

What It Tastes Like

On September 10, 2024, Cigar Aficionado’s newsletter Cigar Insider awarded the robusto 93 points and a medium-full grade: a bold, leather-heavy smoke with cedar, walnut and baking spice, closing on red pepper. Its March 2015 tasting gave 88, citing citrus, tea, leather and minerals. halfwheel scored it 91 in October 2012 and 92 in a September 2014 redux, finding nutty creaminess, cinnamon and flickers of espresso and raisin early, then a stronger floral note.

Who It’s For

  • OpusX regulars wanting the Angel’s Share leaf in a compact size.
  • Nut and spice lovers; both outlets noted those flavors.
  • Comparison smokers who want to set it beside the equally sized Oro Oscuro Robusto.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • 93 points from Cigar Insider (September 2024)
  • Middle-priming wrapper, which Carlos Fuente Jr. sees as the plant’s flavor core, per Fuente
  • halfwheel: 91 (October 2012), 92 (September 2014)

Cons

  • Delicate wrapper: halfwheel saw a small crack on one of three samples
  • Cigar Insider’s earlier 2015 tasting scored it 88

About the Angel’s Share

Per Fuente, the series memorializes a fire that consumed tobacco the family had aged since the late 1940s and 1950s. Fuente’s own account sets the fire in 2012; halfwheel reports August 2011 and a November 2012 release for this robusto.

Pairing and Storage

Given halfwheel’s espresso note and the medium-full rating, a short espresso or aged rum from our cigar pairing guide fits. That fragile wrapper also argues for our humidor basics guide.

Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share Robusto FAQ

How strong is the Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share Robusto?

Cigar Insider’s 2015 and 2024 tastings both landed on medium-full; halfwheel felt it climb from mild to a little past medium. Neither called it full.

How does it differ from a regular OpusX Robusto?

Fuente lists both at 5 1/4 x 50. Angel’s Share uses middle-priming wrapper leaves; core OpusX uses top primings.

What does the name Angel’s Share mean?

In winemaking, it is the portion lost to evaporation while wine rests in wood; Fuente links the cigar to a blaze that destroyed decades-old family tobacco.

Is the Angel’s Share Robusto box-pressed?

Slightly, per halfwheel, which notes the prerelease samples were round.
