What It Tastes Like
We found no Cigar Aficionado score for this size, and halfwheel’s review of the Gran Toro gives no number. Its reviewer started with pepper, caramel and a hint of vanilla over a buttery texture; cinnamon and fruit arrived midway, and pepper and cinnamon built at the end as the caramel faded. Drew Estate lists earth, vanilla, caramel and pepper.
Who It’s For
- Connecticut-wrapper smokers who like a pale leaf with some pepper.
- Undercrown Maduro regulars curious about a lighter, separate blend.
- Anyone wanting six inches without the 60-ring Gordito’s girth.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- halfwheel’s reviewer called the Shade a hit and slightly preferred the Gran Toro to the Robusto
- Its own recipe, not the original Undercrown filler under a new leaf, per halfwheel
Cons
- No Cigar Aficionado rating we could confirm
- halfwheel’s sample needed a late touch-up, and its ash flaked on one side
About Undercrown Shade
halfwheel reports that Drew Estate unveiled Undercrown Shade shortly ahead of the 2015 IPCPR trade show, and quotes master blender Willy Herrera as saying the blend took him over a year to develop. It is rolled at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Nicaragua.
Pairing and Storage
Drew Estate suggests a Hefeweizen or, alcohol-free, a grapefruit soda. For a medium cigar, our cigar pairing guide adds bourbon, Rioja or coffee.
