Description
The Rocky Patel Special Edition Sixty is the 6 x 60, box-pressed format of the Special Edition blend: an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper around Nicaraguan binder and filler, produced at TaviCusa, Rocky Patel’s factory in Nicaragua.
What It Tastes Like
Cigar Aficionado scored the Special Edition Sixty 90 points, first in the August 8, 2017 Cigar Insider and again in the December 2017 magazine, and called its strength medium. The panel found leather and nuts with a floral sweetness and a malted-chocolate finish, though the burn wandered a little. Neptune Cigar’s listing adds white pepper, berries and coffee.
Who It’s For
- Big-ring smokers who prefer a pressed, flatter feel.
- Habano wrapper fans looking for a medium smoke rather than a peppery bruiser.
- Rocky Patel fans who have not yet tried this 2016 line.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Cigar Aficionado’s 90 points apply to the 6 x 60 itself (2017)
- Rated medium by Cigar Aficionado, so it may suit an afternoon smoke
Cons
- Cigar Aficionado’s tasters mentioned an uneven burn
- Cigar Coop’s 2016 review said the double binder’s origin was not disclosed
About the Special Edition Line
Rocky Patel unveiled Special Edition at the 2016 IPCPR show aimed at traditional walk-in tobacconists, in three box-pressed sizes. Cigar Coop reported a double binder beneath the aged Habano leaf.
Pairing and Storage
That malted-chocolate finish suggests a coffee or a bourbon, each a medium-tier suggestion in our cigar pairing guide. Given the wandering burn Cigar Aficionado noted, keep this wide cigar at steady humidity using our humidor basics guide as a reference.
