Description
The Plasencia Alma del Fuego Concepción is a 6 x 54 box-pressed toro made entirely from Nicaraguan tobacco: a sun-grown Jalapa wrapper, with leaf from Ometepe, the volcanic island in Lake Nicaragua, in both the binder and the filler. Cigar Aficionado says that Ometepe leaf was aged for seven years.
What It Tastes Like
Cigar Aficionado and its Cigar Insider newsletter have rated this toro four times, calling it medium-full each time. After 92 points in Cigar Insider (September 2019), it earned 93 and the No. 13 spot on the magazine’s Top 25 of 2019, with tasters finding wood, spice, coffee bean, dried fruit and clove before a sweet, nutty close. The October 2021 issue scored it lower, at 89, citing a loose draw and an uneven burn; an October 2023 tasting then returned it to 93, describing an espresso-like core with dark chocolate, caramel and gentle spice. Cigar Coop scored it 91 in October 2021, calling it medium in strength, with mocha, cream, mineral and white pepper.

About Alma del Fuego
Cigar Coop notes that this toro’s name comes from a volcano in Lake Nicaragua. Nestor Andrés Plasencia told Cigar Aficionado that the “fire” in the line’s name refers to that volcanic soil, the sun on the leaf, and the smoker’s match.
Pairing and Storage
Plasencia suggests a peaty Islay Scotch alongside the Concepción, which lines up with the peated single malts suggested for fuller cigars in our cigar pairing guide.
