Description
The Plasencia Reserva Original Cortez is a 5 3/4 x 56 figurado with a Nicaraguan wrapper, binder and filler. Plasencia sources the blend’s tobacco from EstelÃ, Condega and Jalapa and markets it as OCIA-certified organic.
What It Tastes Like
Cigar Aficionado scored the Cortez 88 points in its February 2024 issue and called it medium in strength. Beyond a pigtail cap and some wrapper glue marks, the tasters found an even draw with warm clove-and-cinnamon spice, ending lightly nutty with flashes of dried orange zest. The 6 1/4 x 44 Corona of this blend, a different size, earned 92 points from the magazine in January 2023.
Who It’s For
- Smokers curious about organic tobacco who want OCIA-certified leaf.
- Fans of tapered shapes wanting a short, thick figurado over a straight parejo.
- Medium-strength smokers who lean toward spice and nuttiness over heavy pepper.

About the Reserva Original
Plasencia launched Reserva Original in 2017, debuting it at that year’s IPCPR trade show, and halfwheel’s review of the Corona counted the Cortez among the line’s seven sizes. Plasencia credits fifth-generation family member Néstor Andrés Plasencia with close to ten years of work breeding the tobacco plant behind the blend.
Pairing and Storage
At medium strength, the Cortez sits in the bourbon-or-Rioja tier of our cigar pairing guide, and the blend’s tasting card from Plasencia names a cappuccino as its match.
