Description
The New World Dorado Gordito is a 5 1/2 x 60 box-pressed Nicaraguan puro by AJ Fernandez, wrapped in sun-grown Habano leaf over a Nicaraguan binder and filler. It is the stoutest of the four shapes that opened the Dorado blend in 2022.
What It Tastes Like
Cigar Aficionado scored the Gordito 91 points in its April 2023 rating and placed it at medium strength. The tasting panel found a toasty profile lifted by sweet herbal tones, leather and a light hint of apple, with some black pepper showing up just ahead of a lengthy finish. Tasters also liked the draw and the even burn.
Who It’s For
- Wide-ring smokers who like a 60 gauge without going past five and a half inches.
- Box-press fans, since all four original Dorado sizes are box-pressed.
- AJ Fernandez regulars curious about leaf grown mostly on one farm.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- 91 points from Cigar Aficionado (April 2023) for this exact size
- Binder and wrapper both come from the Dorado farm, per Cigar Aficionado
Cons
- A 60 ring is a lot of cigar for anyone used to slimmer shapes
- Strength labels are not unanimous, from medium to full
About New World Dorado
Dorado, Spanish for golden, is named for a young Estelà farm whose soil has an unusual gold cast for the region; Cigar Aficionado reported in July 2022 that the line drew on that farm’s first harvest. It became the fifth New World blend, and halfwheel later reported a Corona joining the original four sizes in 2023.
Pairing and Storage
At medium strength, the Gordito suits the bourbon, Rioja or espresso picks in our cigar pairing guide.
