Fernandez, pairing a Criollo ’98 wrapper with Estelí binder and filler that Cigar Coop’s 2017 launch report said had aged three to five years. Description

The New World Puro Especial Gordo is a 6 x 58 Nicaraguan puro from A.J. Fernandez, rolled with a Criollo ’98 wrapper over binder and filler grown around Estelí. It joined the line in 2018, a year after the blend’s 2017 debut.

What It Tastes Like

We found no dated critic review of the Gordo itself, so these notes come from sibling sizes. Cigar Aficionado gave the 6 x 48 Short Churchill 91 points in its February 2018 rating and called it medium-full, describing earthy smoke with baking spice and leather, then a finish of chocolate and cream. The 6 1/2 x 52 Toro scored 93 points and placed No. 12 on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2017. The Gordo shares that blend at a 58 ring gauge.

Who It’s For

  • Big-ring smokers who want a 58 gauge at just six inches.
  • Puro fans curious about leaf from one family’s Estelí farms.
  • Puro Especial Toro regulars wanting the blend in a wider shape.

  • Strength is debated, from medium to full

About New World Puro Especial

A.J. Fernandez developed Puro Especial with his father, Ismael, as the third New World blend, after the 2014 original and New World Connecticut. An earlier version came out quietly in 2016 as New World Habano Especial, and in 2021 the red boxes gave way to a new dress box with the blend untouched.
