Description
The GTO Royal Game Connecticut Robusto is a 5 1/4 x 50 robusto extra rolled in a Connecticut shade wrapper over Corojo tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic’s Cibao Valley. In October 2025, GTO Dominican Cigars said the Royal Game would reach its retailers that month in two wrappers: this shade version and a darker Connecticut broadleaf one.
What It Tastes Like
We found no independent, scored review of this cigar yet, so there is no rating to report. In its October 2025 announcement, GTO called the shade-wrapped version smooth and creamy. GTO’s announcement, as carried by Stogie Press, lists toasted nuts, aged oak, a mild sweetness, earthy tones and light pepper for the line. Those are the maker’s descriptions, not a critic’s.
Who It’s For
- Shade-wrapper smokers who want a Dominican Corojo blend under a pale Connecticut leaf.
- GTO newcomers trying the brand’s newest line.
- Side-by-side tasters pairing it with the broadleaf Royal Game to hear what the wrapper adds.

- Offered in a single size
About the Royal Game
GTO founder Dr. Oscar Rodriguez says he built this blend from a formula his grandfather had recorded in family ledgers, which specified well-aged Cuban-seed leaf of the first generation. A handwritten line on the formula’s last page reserved it for the royal game, and GTO took that chess reference as the cigar’s name.

GTO Royal Game Connecticut Robusto FAQ
How strong is the GTO Royal Game Connecticut Robusto?
We found no strength rating from GTO or from an independent reviewer. We list it as mild-medium as a shelf guide, not a published rating.
What size is the Royal Game Connecticut?
It comes in one size only: a 5 1/4 x 50 robusto extra, per GTO’s October 2025 announcement as reported by halfwheel and Cigar Inspector.
How is the Connecticut version different from the Royal Game Maduro?
Only the wrapper. The darker version swaps the shade leaf for a family-grown Connecticut broadleaf seed wrapper over the same Corojo blend.
Where does the name Royal Game come from?
From a handwritten note in the blending formula Dr. Rodriguez found; the royal game is a nickname for chess.
