Description
The Zino Platinum Z-Class Robusto is the 550 R from Zino’s Platinum Z-Class series, a 4 7/8 x 50 robusto that sets a Dominican wrapper over a Peruvian binder and a ligero-heavy filler of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobacco.
What It Tastes Like
Stogie Review smoked the 550 R a couple of weeks after it joined the Platinum range and judged it full in body, with molasses-like sweetness, roasted nuts and spice up front, hints of chocolate and occasional espresso, then cedar and an orange-like sweetness late. We found no published independent score for this exact size. Cigar Coop’s February 7, 2014 revisit of the larger Toro (654 T) scored that size 91, medium to full, citing grass, pepper, nuts and cedar sweetness.
Who It’s For
- Zino Platinum smokers wanting more muscle: Cigar Aficionado reported it outranks the Scepter and Crown in strength.
- Ligero fans who like a spicy 50-ring robusto.
- Smokers curious about Peruvian binder leaf.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Cigar Coop placed the Z-Class at #22 on its 2011 Cigar of the Year countdown
- Dominican wrapper and Peruvian binder over a filler built from four different ligeros
Cons
- Stogie Review said the 550 R needed a long toast to light, and its final third tended to burn unevenly and go out
- Cigar Coop felt the blend had lost some complexity by 2014 (Toro)
