Description

The Knuckle Sandwich Maduro Robusto is a 5 x 52 robusto with a dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan filler. Its official vitola name is Robusto J, and halfwheel listed it between the slimmer Corona Gorda R and the bigger Toro H in the Maduro’s launch lineup.

What It Tastes Like

Cigar Aficionado gave the Maduro Robusto 92 points in June 2023 and rated it full in strength. Their panel found it as bold as its dark wrapper suggests: dark-roast coffee, earth and a charred, toasty note, with black pepper kept in check by raisin-like sweetness, and an even burn throughout.

Who It’s For

  • Smokers who want a strong maduro in a size that doesn’t take all evening.
  • Coffee-and-pepper fans drawn to the roasted, spicy profile Cigar Aficionado described.
  • Knuckle Sandwich Habano smokers curious how the darker Sumatra-wrapped version compares, since both blends use Nicaraguan binder and filler.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Scored 92 points by Cigar Aficionado (June 2023) in this exact size
  • Compact 5 x 52 format suits a shorter smoking window

Cons

  • Rated full strength by Cigar Aficionado, so it may overwhelm newer smokers
  • Retailers disagree on strength (JR Cigar says medium), so expectations vary

Pairing and Storage

Since Cigar Aficionado placed this robusto at full strength, our cigar pairing guide points toward an aged rum or a peated single malt to match its roasted coffee side.
