Description
The Amar by AJ Fernandez Toro is a 6 x 56 parejo built entirely from Nicaraguan tobacco, with a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper covering a Nicaraguan binder and filler. A.J. Fernandez Cigars introduced the four-size Amar line at the 2026 PCA show as a regular-production release, according to Cigar Coop and halfwheel.
What It Tastes Like
Halfwheel’s review of this exact size describes wood, bread and white pepper early on, alongside earth, leather and a berry-like sweetness. The reviewer found the salty pepper overpowering at times, picked up nuts and lemon after the midpoint, and noted oak and a creamy edge late. For the 6 1/2 x 50 Torito, Cigar Insider tasted pecan, honey, chili spice, oak, cinnamon and cedar.
Who It’s For
- Thick-gauge toro smokers who like a 56 ring and a long smoke.
- Nicaraguan puro fans who want peppery, earthy leaf from a single country.
- Patient collectors willing to rest a few cigars first, which halfwheel suggests may soften the sharp edges.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Rolled at San Lotano in Ocotal, a second AJ Fernandez factory, per halfwheel
- Bold, layered profile with pepper, earth, leather and sweetness
- A sister size, the Torito, scored 91 in Cigar Insider (Aug. 11, 2026)
Cons
- No dated independent score for the Toro itself that we could confirm
- Halfwheel’s samples drew tightly, held a fragile ash and leaned salty
About the Amar Line
Halfwheel and Cigar Coop tie Amar to the 2025 fire at the main Estelà factory, framing it as Fernandez’s thanks to those who helped him recover. Per Cigar Coop, the word means to love in Spanish and moon in Arabic, nodding to his Cuban and Lebanese roots.
