Smoking a cigar isn’t just a pastime it’s a ritual, a meditation, a conversation starter and a great equalizer. There’s the selection of the cigar, the cutting, the toasting, the light and then the actual smoking. It all culminates to make the full cigar experience.
Once you’ve chosen your cigar and the appropriate vitola for the amount of time you have, your next decision is what cut do you want? Do you want a straight cut for full draw? Do you want to restrict it a little and direct it somewhat to the palate with a V (cat’s eye, diamond) cut? Want to extend the smoking time and restrict the draw with a punch? It’s your personal choice that’s occasionally dictated by the head of the cigar. A straight or V on a flat cap is risky as the cap is so close to the shoulder and it’s easy for the inexperienced to take off too much. If you’ve decided on a straight cut the key is to examine the cigar and determine where the cap ends then be sure to cut above the cap line to prevent the cigar unraveling. Take your time prior to the cut and really look at your cigar, feel the suppleness of the wrapper, take in the band, get a sniff of the foot and pull a couple of cold draws before you light it.
Lighting is an important part of the ritual and there’s multiple but no right way to light your cigar. Use a soft flame, use matches (let the sulfur burn off first), use a cedar spill or a torch lighter – whatever suits your mood. Before you burn your cigar take your fire source and lightly toast the foot but never put it directly in the flame. Get a light glow going prior to putting it in your mouth and draw the flame towards the cigar with even steady draws – don’t puff, puff, puff you’ll heat up the tobacco too fast and make your cigar harsh.
Once you’re lit take your time, you don’t rush a cigar, take a draw every 45 to 60 seconds, it’ll stay lit. Roll the smoke in your mouth, if you can retrohale (release through your nose) a little bit of it before letting it go, enjoy the aromas and notes. Think about what you’re experiencing and what the aromas remind you of, take a sip of your beverage and compare how the notes change. Sit, relax, interact with those around you if you’re inclined. Take your time, don’t rush the experience, a good cigar smoking session should be akin to meditation.
