Description
The Viaje Skull and Bones Big Ivan is a 5 x 60 petite gordo from the Red branch of Viaje’s weapon-themed Skull and Bones family. Its name refers to the Tsar Bomba, which halfwheel describes as the mightiest nuclear device ever built and set off.
What It Tastes Like
We know of no Cigar Aficionado rating, but Cigar Coop has scored three batches. The 2013 original earned 92: pepper and coffee drifting toward mocha, then earth and leather, at full strength. The 2016 edition got 90, shifting from earth, white pepper and citrus to a chocolate-led close. The 2019 cigars slipped to 85, with cocoa, citrus and florals. We found no review of later batches.
Who It’s For
- Big-ring fans who want girth at a manageable 5 inches.
- Seasoned strong-cigar smokers; Cigar Coop steered newcomers away from the 2016 batch.
- Anyone completing the Red trio, whose largest size this is.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Cigar Coop scores of 92 (2013) and 90 (2016)
- An excellent draw in all three Cigar Coop reviews
Cons
- Burn touch-ups were needed several times on the 2013 and 2016 samples
- The 2019 batch dropped to 85, and the current blend is undisclosed
About the Big Ivan
Cigar Coop noted it was the first 60-ring Skull and Bones when it appeared in 2013. It rejoined the Fat Man and Little Boy as the Red trio in 2016, a batch Cigar Coop traced to PDR Cigars and described as Viaje’s more powerful Skull and Bones recipe.

Viaje Skull and Bones Big Ivan FAQ
How strong is the Viaje Skull and Bones Big Ivan?
It varies by batch: Cigar Coop rated the 2013 original full, the 2016 cigars medium-full to full and the 2019 run medium-full. JR Cigars calls it mellow to medium. Our product details show Medium-Full, the closest fit to Cigar Coop’s 2016 and 2019 verdicts.
What does the name Big Ivan mean?
Big Ivan is what the Tsar Bomba, a Soviet hydrogen bomb set off in the early 1960s, came to be called, so it suits the weapon names used across Skull and Bones.
What is the Big Ivan’s blend?
Viaje hasn’t published it for recent batches. The 2016 version used a San Andrés wrapper from Mexico over Dominican binder and Dominican, Nicaraguan and U.S. filler, and halfwheel couldn’t confirm that later batches kept it.
When did the Big Ivan come out?
February 2013. halfwheel’s Skull and Bones list dates later batches to 2016, 2019 and 2023, with a fresh shipment covered in February 2026.
