Description
The Tatuaje Reserva Broadleaf Cojonu 2003 takes one of Pete Johnson’s most respected Brown Label blends and finishes it in a darker, richer Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper — part of a collection built specifically to reimagine Tatuaje’s classic sizes.
Construction & Origin
This 6½ x 52 toro is built from first-generation Cuban-seed tobaccos grown in Nicaragua, with a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper laid over the same internals as the original Cojonu 2003. Every cigar is hand-rolled at the My Father Cigar Factory in Estelí under the García family’s supervision. The Cojonu series itself dates back to Tatuaje’s 2003 founding, designed by Johnson as a stronger, bolder counterpart to his standard Brown Label line — the name comes from “cojonudo,” Cuban slang loosely translating to “ballsy.”
Flavor Profile
Full-bodied and rich, the Broadleaf wrapper brings a chewy, heavy density with a natural sweetness that balances out the peppery intensity found in the original Brown Label version. Reviewers note layers of black pepper, thick earth, charred oak, cocoa, and baking spice, with sweetness that shows up in just the right moments through the smoke. Several reviewers specifically recommend letting a box rest for a year or two — the blend is known to mellow and deepen significantly with extra aging.
Why It’s Sought After
Cojonu 2003 is regularly named among Pete Johnson’s own personal favorite Tatuaje blends, and the Broadleaf treatment gives an already well-loved cigar real additional depth. Originally released as part of a massive 100-cigar master case collection at $1,200, Tatuaje later broke the line into more accessible 10-count boxes by size — making this a genuine, still-limited way to try one of the brand’s most respected recipes in a different wrapper.
