Description
The Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua Espeso is a 5 1/2 x 60 Nicaraguan puro: wrapper, binder and filler are all grown in Nicaragua, and JR Cigar describes the line’s dark wrapper as Nicaraguan Habano. Altadis U.S.A. added this thick, box-pressed size in 2022 as the line’s fifth vitola, and A.J. Fernandez rolls it at his San Lotano factory.
What It Tastes Like
Cigar Aficionado’s tasters have rated the Espeso more than once. A Cigar Insider review from September 2022 gave it 92 points at medium-full strength. In June 2024 it earned 95 points at medium strength, with roasted coffee and toast up front, then earth and pepper adding weight. It then scored 97, rated medium-full, and placed No. 2 on the magazine’s Top 25 Cigars of 2024; Gregory Mottola wrote that the thicker format holds on to the coffee, earth and spice of the slimmer sizes and even heightens them.
