Ask a Cohiba fan about the Red Dot line and you’ll usually get a strong opinion one way or the other — this one’s earned a real following since it first launched.

The name “Cohiba” actually comes from the Taíno language, meaning “sweet grass,” which the native peoples of the Caribbean once used for a rolled tobacco leaf. General Cigar (the same company behind Punch, Partagas, and Hoyo de Monterrey) spent five years developing this specific blend before releasing it, and it’s gone on to become the brand’s flagship expression — a 92-rated cigar that’s stuck around for good reason.

This Churchill is handmade in the Dominican Republic, 7″ x 49, using a rich, oily Cameroon wrapper grown in West Africa. Underneath that sits an Indonesian binder from Jember, wrapped around aged Dominican Piloto Cubano filler tobacco. It’s a combination that takes real skill to balance, since Cameroon wrapper can be a lot on its own — but here it’s paired with tobaccos chosen specifically to keep things smooth rather than overwhelming.

Flavor-wise, expect wood, cedar, and earth up front, moving into cocoa and black pepper, with caramel and a little natural sweetness rounding out the finish. It sits comfortably in the medium-to-full range, so it’s got real weight to it, but nothing that fights you the whole way through. The Churchill size gives it enough length for a proper, unhurried sit.

Cohiba’s built its reputation on cigars people keep coming back to, and Red Dot is a good example of why — it’s not trying to be flashy, it’s just consistently well-made and full of flavor.
