This one’s a newer name, but there’s real pedigree behind it. Avowed Cigars only launched in February 2025, started by Andrew Considine and Dave West, the two guys behind Small Batch Cigar. Rather than build a factory themselves, they teamed up with Klaas Kelner, son of Henke Kelner, who ran operations at Davidoff for over 30 years, at Klaas’s own newly opened Kelner Cigars S.A.S. in the Dominican Republic.

The story behind New Dawn is a nice one: the Avowed team basically described their idea of a perfect all-day cigar to Klaas, and he came back with a single blend that nailed it so well, it just became the New Dawn. This Robusto Grande measures 5″ x 54, one of the line’s original two sizes (there’s also a Toro and, more recently, a Corona Gorda). It’s wrapped in a dark Ecuadorian Connecticut leaf sourced from A.S.P. and aged twice as long as usual specifically to smooth things out, over an Ecuadorian Habano binder, with Dominican fillers of Piloto Cubano, Criollo ’98, and San Vicente. Each stick gets a distinctive double band in gold with light and dark blue accents.

As for the smoke: it’s genuinely mild-to-medium, built to be easy and enjoyable rather than a challenge. Expect caramel and buttercream sweetness up front, moving into cedar, toasted almonds, and fresh bread notes, with a little red pepper and citrus keeping things from feeling flat. It’s the kind of cigar you could reasonably smoke any time of day, which is exactly what it was designed for.

If you’re a fan of well-made Connecticut-wrapped cigars but want something with a bit more depth than the usual mild, one-note version, New Dawn is worth trying — especially given the serious cigar-making pedigree quietly behind it.
