The Asylum 13 Toro is a 6 x 52 all-Nicaraguan cigar with a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper, the toro option of Asylum’s original 13 blend. Published reviews of other Asylum 13 sizes mostly rate the blend medium-full to full, and we sell it as singles.

Description

The Asylum 13 Toro is a 6 x 52 Nicaraguan puro: a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper, which CLE calls dark, over a Nicaraguan binder and Cuban-seed Nicaraguan filler that CLE says is aged. CLE Cigar Co. lists it as the 52 x 6 of the original Asylum 13 blend.

What It Tastes Like

We found no critic’s review of the 6 x 52 itself, so these notes come from the 5 x 50 robusto. Cigar Coop (January 23, 2013) found sharp pepper at first giving way to cocoa, then leather, with chocolate back near the end; it called the strength full and scored it 90. Cigar Aficionado (February 2018, 88 points, medium-full) noted chocolate and dried fruit over malt. CLE names earth, cocoa, espresso bean and mild spice.

Who It’s For

  • Fans of strong Nicaraguan tobacco.
  • Smokers who find Asylum’s 60 and 70 gauges too thick.
  • Wrapper comparers who want to smoke it beside one of Asylum’s maduro sizes.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • All-Nicaraguan leaf under a Habano-seed wrapper
  • A 52 ring gauge, slimmer than the line’s 60, 70 and 80 ring sizes

Cons

  • We found no published review of this 6 x 52 size
  • Cigar Aficionado scored the 6 x 60 only 85 in June 2018, noting a thin draw and uneven burn

About Asylum 13

Cigar Coop reports that Tom Lazuka and Kevin Baxter launched Asylum around the 2012 IPCPR show, with Asylum 13 as the fullest of three debut blends. CLE Cigar Co. now sells the line.

Pairing and Storage

Most reviews we found put the blend at medium-full or stronger, so try the full-strength picks in our cigar pairing guide, like aged rum or a peated single malt.

Asylum 13 Toro FAQ

How strong is the Asylum 13 Toro?

Opinions vary: Cigar Coop rated the robusto full in 2013, Cigar Aficionado rated two sizes medium-full in 2018, CLE describes it as medium to full in body, and halfwheel found its 7 x 70 box-pressed version mild-medium to medium. Our store lists it as full.

What size is the Asylum 13 Toro?

Six inches long with a 52 ring gauge.

Is the Asylum 13 Toro a Nicaraguan puro?

Yes. Cigar Coop and halfwheel report Nicaraguan wrapper, binder and filler.

Is this the same cigar as the Asylum 13 Maduro Toro?

No. Neptune Cigar lists that one at the same 6 x 52 size, but with a maduro wrapper instead of the Nicaraguan Habano leaf.
