Description

The Arturo Fuente Canones Natural is an 8 1/2 x 52 cigar from Fuente’s Gran Reserva series, rolled with a Cameroon wrapper around a Dominican binder and Dominican filler. No other Gran Reserva size runs as long.

What It Tastes Like

Cigar Aficionado gave the Cañones 90 points in its October 2002 issue. Tasters noted a dark wrapper with plenty of tooth and a slightly firm feel, plus sweet cedar with a tart hint of cocoa, finishing dry. Its spec line named an Ecuador wrapper, so that sample may differ from today’s Cameroon version. The magazine later listed it at 88 points among its Best Bargain Cigars of 2011. JR Cigar describes a nutty center with light spice; Famous Smoke Shop mentions nut and wood with gentle sweetness.

Who It’s For

  • Smokers planning a long, unhurried session.
  • Cameroon wrapper fans who want more of that leaf than a Churchill offers.
  • Anyone wanting a moderate cigar rather than a heavy one.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Scored 90 by Cigar Aficionado in 2002 and 88 in its 2011 bargain roundup
  • Longest size in Fuente’s flagship Gran Reserva series

Cons

  • Needs a big block of free time
  • No Cigar Aficionado score we found after 2011
  • Shops rate its strength anywhere from mild to medium

About the Gran Reserva Series

Arturo Fuente calls Gran Reserva the flagship of its brand. Of its nine Gran Reserva sizes, the Canoñes alone is boxed in 20s rather than 25s.

Pairing and Storage

Holt’s rates the Gran Reserva line medium, and for medium cigars our cigar and drink pairing guide points to bourbon, a Rioja, or coffee; with a smoke this long, plan on a refill.

Arturo Fuente Canones Natural FAQ

How strong is the Arturo Fuente Canones Natural?

Retailers disagree: Holt’s (for the whole line) and Famous Smoke Shop say medium, JR Cigar mellow to medium, and Neptune mild. Cigar Aficionado’s 2002 review gave no strength.

Is it spelled Canones, Cañones or Canoñes?

All three appear. Fuente’s website prints Canoñes, Cigar Aficionado uses Cañones, and many retailers drop the tilde.

What size is the Canones Natural?

Arturo Fuente lists it at 8 1/2 inches with a 52 ring gauge and packs it 20 to a box.

What binder and filler are inside it?

JR Cigar and Cigars International list Dominican binder and filler under the Cameroon leaf, and Neptune describes the tobacco inside as Dominican.
