Description
The Viaje Super Shot 10 Gauge is a 3 1/2 x 54 short robusto with a Nicaraguan criollo wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler. It is the larger of the two Super Shot sizes, boxed in 25s that mimic shotgun shell cartons.
What It Tastes Like
Published reviews cover the early batches. halfwheel scored the 2012 debut 87 points and called it one of the strongest cigars of the past year, with cedar, earth, leather, nuts and sweetness under plenty of black and red pepper. Retasted a year later, those cigars earned 91, softened to about medium with cocoa and sweet nuts. The 2013 criollo batch got an 86: toasty and creamy with an oatmeal-cookie sweetness, building from medium-plus to full by the second third.
Who It’s For
- Smokers who want strength in a short format, like a break at the range.
- Viaje collectors who follow the brand’s small-batch returns.
- Fans of Nicaraguan tobacco who like pepper up front.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- A wide 54 ring in only 3 1/2 inches
- Scored as high as 91 by halfwheel after a year of rest
- Fun shotgun-shell packaging tied to the founder’s clay-shooting hobby
Cons
- The pepper can be a lot when it is fresh; halfwheel found it mellowed considerably with age
- halfwheel’s review of the 2013 criollo batch noted the smoke thinning out in the last third
About the Viaje Super Shot
Viaje owner Andre Farkas got into clay shooting and found regular cigars went out between his turns, so the Super Shot arrived in early 2012 in two sizes named for shotgun gauges. It has returned in many later years.
Pairing and Storage
This peppery smoke can handle a peated single malt or aged rum (see our cigar pairing guide). halfwheel found it noticeably milder and more refined after a year of rest, so resting a few in a humidor can pay off; our humidor basics guide explains how.

Viaje Super Shot 10 Gauge FAQ
How strong is the Viaje Super Shot 10 Gauge?
It depends on the batch and its age. halfwheel called the 2012 debut one of the strongest cigars of the past year, but the same cigars had calmed to about medium a year later. We list it as full.
Is it spelled Super Shot or Supershot?
It is written as two words, Super Shot, in halfwheel and Cigar Aficionado coverage; “Supershot” is just a common search spelling of the same Viaje series. This 3 1/2 x 54 size is the one named 10 Gauge.
What’s the difference between the Super Shot 10 Gauge and 12 Gauge?
Size. The 12 Gauge is a touch smaller at 3 1/4 x 52 and uses the same criollo blend.
How is the Super Shot different from the Viaje Buckshot?
The Buckshot, added in 2020, swaps the criollo leaf for a Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper.
Where is the Viaje Super Shot made?
halfwheel reported the 2012, 2013 and 2021 batches were rolled at RaÃces Cubanas in Honduras from Nicaraguan tobacco. halfwheel noted that Viaje did not disclose the factory for more recent batches, starting with 2024.
