Description
The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Epicure is a 6 x 56 toro with a Cuban-seed sun grown wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler; Perdomo calls it semi box-pressed. Perdomo released the 20th Anniversary line in 2012 to mark two decades of growing tobacco and making cigars.
What It Tastes Like
Cigar Aficionado scored the Sun Grown Epicure 89 points in its October 2014 issue. The panel liked its generous draw and found toasted, nutty flavors backed by leather, though it left the mouth slightly dry.
Who It’s For
- Bourbon drinkers curious how a wrapper rested in bourbon barrels smokes.
- Fans of a thick toro who like a 56 ring with a slightly squared press.
- Nicaraguan puro lovers who want a blend grown entirely on Perdomo’s own farms.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- 89 points from Cigar Aficionado (October 2014)
- Sun grown wrapper aged in bourbon barrels after fermentation
- All tobacco grown on Perdomo farms in EstelÃ, Condega and Jalapa
Cons
- Cigar Aficionado’s tasters noted a somewhat dry finish
- A 56 ring gauge may feel bulky if you favor slimmer cigars
About the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown
Perdomo’s July 2012 launch release cited wrappers aged over six years plus 14 months in bourbon barrels after fermentation; the brand’s current website instead puts the Sun Grown leaf at eight years of age with 10 further months in barrels. The Epicure was one of five sizes shown at the August 2012 IPCPR trade show in Orlando.
Pairing and Storage
Perdomo itself recommends Scotch or bourbon with this blend, and a neat bourbon echoes the barrel-rested wrapper; our cigar pairing guide also points fuller smokes toward aged rum.
