Description
The Black Works Studio Rorschach Sumatra is a 4 1/2 x 48 short robusto that puts a Sumatra wrapper over a Nicaraguan habano binder and Nicaraguan filler. It is made at Fabrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua, where Black Label Trading Co. creator James Brown is a partner, per halfwheel.
What It Tastes Like
We found no independent critic review of this version, so the flavor notes come from the maker. In its release announcement, covered by Cigar Coop and Blind Man’s Puff in March 2023 and by halfwheel, Black Label said it runs lighter than the original Rorschach and lets Jalapa tobacco lead, with cedar, cinnamon and gentle pepper that fade into a lingering, creamy close.
Who It’s For
- Rorschach smokers who want to taste what a Sumatra leaf does to the house blend.
- Anyone with a short break who still wants a 48 ring.
- Black Works Studio newcomers curious about the version its maker calls lighter.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Compact 4 1/2-inch length suits a shorter sitting
- halfwheel reported it joined the company’s core lineup
Cons
- No independent critic score yet for this exact blend
- Strength descriptions vary from source to source
About the Rorschach
halfwheel counted the first Rorschach, a 5 x 38 under Ecuadorian habano, among Black Works Studio’s opening trio in December 2015. In 2022 Cigar Coop quoted Brown saying it began as the factory’s house smoke, blended from all of its filler tobaccos.
