Description
The Perla del Mar Maduro Double Toro is a 6 x 60 box-pressed cigar with a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper around Nicaraguan binder and filler. J.C. Newman makes it at its PENSA factory in EstelÃ, Nicaragua with filler from four regions: Pueblo Nuevo, La Reina, Condega and Jalapa.
What It Tastes Like
Cigar Aficionado gave the Double Toro 89 points in its October 2023 issue and called it medium-full. Its tasters described cedar and earth through an open draw, with coffee bean and honey in the background, then a dry cocoa note that lingered.
Cigar Coop reviewed this size in November 2022: medium strength and body at the start, with both building toward, but not quite reaching, medium-full by the end. William Cooper found coffee and soil up front with cedar and dried fruit, then white pepper building toward the end.
Who It’s For
- Big-ring smokers who want a 60 gauge with a broadleaf wrapper.
- Coffee-and-earth fans, notes both outlets reported.
- Perla del Mar explorers after the line’s darkest leaf in its thickest size.
Pros and Cons

Cons
- Cigar Coop noted some harshness late in the smoke
- The 60 ring may feel bulky to fans of slimmer sizes
About Perla del Mar
Perla del Mar, Spanish for “Pearl of the Sea,” dates to 1905, when the Perfecto Garcia brothers started the brand. J.C. Newman brought the name back in 2012, added this Maduro in 2016, and rebuilt the blends, bands and press in 2020, according to Cigar Coop.

What size is the Double Toro?
J.C. Newman lists it at 6 inches long with a 60 ring gauge. Cigar Aficionado files it under Grande, and Cigar Coop’s 2020 launch report called it the Gordo.

At J.C. Newman’s PENSA factory in EstelÃ, Nicaragua, according to the company and Cigar Coop.
