Description
The Oliva Serie V Lancero is a slender 7 x 38 panetela that wraps Nicaraguan binder and filler, including Jalapa Valley ligero, in a sun-grown Ecuadorian leaf. Oliva Cigar Co. lists it among the eight shapes of its Serie V line.
What It Tastes Like
Cigar Aficionado has reviewed this exact size four times. Its top score, 94 in January 2020 (medium-full, No. 6 on the magazine’s Top 25 of 2019), noted a dense, earthy start opening into pistachio, nutmeg and chocolate-dipped almonds. The August 2025 tasting (91, medium) found candied pecan and a buttery sweetness settling into cedar and earth. December 2023 (91) brought nuttiness, dark toast and espresso, and August 2022 (89) opened on red and black pepper.
Who It’s For
- Lancero devotees who prefer a narrow 38 ring over a chunky toro.
- Serie V smokers wanting the blend in its slimmest shape.
- Anyone with an unhurried evening, given a smoke time JR Cigars puts at 90 to 100 minutes.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Scored 91 to 94 by Cigar Aficionado in 2020, 2023 and 2025
- Even burn noted in the 2022 and 2023 reviews
Cons
- Cigar Aficionado scored it a lower 89 in August 2022
- Slim shapes leave little margin for rolling errors that hurt the draw, as the 2020 review notes
About the Serie V
Oliva blends Nicaraguan long filler with Jalapa Valley ligero that receives a special fermentation. Cigar Aficionado’s 2020 review pointed out that a small rolling slip can leave a lancero with a poor draw and that the market leans toward thicker ring gauges, yet Oliva keeps producing this one.
Pairing and Storage
Given those espresso notes, strong coffee or bourbon is a sensible match (see our cigar and drink guide). For a slim cigar, steady humidity matters; our humidor basics guide shows how.

Oliva Serie V Lancero FAQ
Is the Oliva Serie V Lancero full-bodied?

What wrapper does the Serie V Lancero use?
Oliva describes a sun-grown Ecuadorian leaf from the upper primings, as do Cigar Aficionado’s 2023 and 2025 entries; its 2020 and 2022 entries listed Nicaragua.
How long does a Serie V Lancero take to smoke?
JR Cigars put it at roughly 90 to 100 minutes in a July 2022 blog post.
How does the Lancero differ from other Serie V sizes?
