Description

The Alec & Bradley Kintsugi Toro pairs a 6 x 52 frame with a Habano wrapper grown in the Trojes region of Honduras and a binder and filler blended from Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco. Brothers Alec and Bradley Rubin blended it for production at the Raíces Cubanas factory in Danlí, Honduras, and the first boxes went out to stores in December 2020.

What It Tastes Like

Cigar Insider, Cigar Aficionado’s newsletter, scored this exact size 87 points in its February 9, 2021 issue and called it medium in strength. Its tasters found wood up front, with cereal and some herbs behind it, and the cereal came back at the close. Reviews of the Robusto (5 x 50) ran higher: Stogie Press scored it 95 on February 25, 2021, noting cinnamon, cedar, vanilla and cocoa, and Cigar Coop gave it 88 on October 19, 2021, citing raisin, earth and red pepper.

Who It’s For

  • Medium-strength smokers after a woody, unhurried toro.
  • Honduran tobacco fans curious about a wrapper from the Trojes growing region.
  • Blind Faith and Gatekeeper smokers exploring the Rubins’ next blend.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Its Robusto sibling earned 95 from Stogie Press (February 2021)
  • Made at Raíces Cubanas, the Danlí factory the Rubins returned to

Cons

  • The Toro’s own Cigar Insider score, 87, sits below both Robusto reviews
  • Cigar Coop (Robusto, October 2021) found it more traditional than Blind Faith or Gatekeeper

About the Kintsugi Line

Kintsugi is a Japanese craft that mends broken ceramics with lacquer containing gold or silver. Announced in March 2020 for a late-spring launch, the line was held up by the pandemic and shipped that December in four sizes, from a 5 5/8 x 46 Corona Gorda to a 6 x 60 Gordo.

Alec & Bradley Kintsugi Toro FAQ

How strong is the Alec & Bradley Kintsugi Toro?

Mostly medium. Cigar Insider rated this size medium in February 2021, and Cigar Coop and Stogie Press found the Robusto medium; JR Cigar’s spec chart lists it as full, though JR’s own description calls it medium-bodied.

Where is the Kintsugi Toro made?

At Fábrica de Tabacos Raíces Cubanas in Danlí, Honduras, according to Cigar Coop and JR Cigar.

Why is it called Kintsugi?

The Rubin brothers borrowed the name of a Japanese gold-lacquer pottery repair, framing it as a picture of a divided cigar industry pulling back together, per Cigar Coop’s March 2020 report.
