The Padron Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro first reached cigar shops on September 8, the 45th anniversary of the creation of Padron Cigars Inc. by Jose Orlando Padron. The 83-year-old Cuban emigree is the embodiment of the American dream, having come to the United States in the early 1960s with nothing more than a few hundred dollars, a solid work ethic and the burning desire to make cigars that tasted as good as the ones he smoked as a young man in Cuba. The image of a hammer on this special release commemorates a most precious gift given to him by a friend when he was virtually penniless?the tool allowed him to eke out a living as a carpenter, money he saved to form a small cigar company.

Description

The Padrón Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro is a genuine legend — Cigar Aficionado’s #1 Cigar of the Year for 2009, rated a perfect 95 points, and one of the most celebrated releases in the brand’s entire history.

Construction & Origin

This 6 x 52 severely box-pressed toro first reached shops on September 8, the exact 45th anniversary of José Orlando Padrón founding the company. Every leaf — wrapper, binder, and filler — is Nicaraguan tobacco aged a full 10 years, drawn from some of the family’s oldest stockpiled leaf, hand-rolled at the Villazón factory. The image of a hammer on the band commemorates a real, personal piece of Padrón family history: a tool given to founder José Orlando Padrón by a friend when he arrived in America with almost nothing, which he used to work as a carpenter and save enough money to eventually start his cigar company. Reviewers have since nicknamed the cigar simply “The Hammer.”

Flavor Profile

Full-bodied and genuinely intense, this cigar delivers rich, hearty coffee, dark chocolate, espresso, leather, black pepper, spice, and cocoa, with reviewers consistently noting a stronger, more powerful profile than typical Padróns. Cigar Aficionado praised it as “jammed with rich, hearty, coffee notes and a heady amount of spices,” and one longtime forum reviewer scored it 96, saying it needed only a touch more sweetness to be a perfect 100.

Why It’s Sought After

This is the third time a Padrón cigar was named Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year in the award’s first six years — a level of dominance no other brand has matched. The No. 45 permanently elevated the entire Family Reserve line’s reputation, and it remains one of the most requested, most collected releases in Padrón’s storied history.
